We Trekked Through Drizzles and Downpours to Find the Best Rain Boots for Walking

A downpour can really dampen your day, whether you're out for a leisurely hike or a long-distance trek. Thankfully, waterproof rain boots can keep you dry, safe, and comfortable on a walk in wet weather. The best rain boots for walking protect against the elements with waterproofing, durable construction, warm insulation, and grippy traction in mud or snow. They should feel breathable, comfortable, and supportive for your feet, and slip on and off with ease.

To find the best rain boots for walking, we began by speaking with experts—including podiatrists, foot and ankle surgeons, a certified fitness trainer, and an outdoor gear specialist—for advice on what key features to look for. Then, we tested 55 expert-approved rain boots from top, trusted brands. Wearing each pair in drizzles, downpours, and wet weather, we evaluate based on fit, durability, performance, waterproofing, and value. Another reason to trust us? An ACE-certified fitness instructor and RRCA-certified running coach from our Review Board reviewed this article for accuracy and how to find comfortable, durable rainboots for walking.

Rain Boots for Walking We Also Tested

We’ve tested over 55 pairs of rain boots but only included 14 in our final list of recommendations. While these four have some noteworthy features, they didn’t quite make the cut:

  • Hunter’s City Explorer Short Boots stand out for their excellent waterproofing and traction. We also appreciate the mid-height boot shaft that hits the leg at a flattering spot. But the chunky heel makes the boots feel heavy and the odd fit causes our heel to constantly slip—causing discomfort and distraction.
  • Fashionable and sustainably hand-made, Ilse Jacobsen’s Rub Boots are a comfy and lightweight option. But after weeks of rigorous testing—and considering the higher-than-average price tag—we think the quality is lacking for the cost.
  • During testing, Kamik’s Heidi 2 Rain Boots proved to be easy to clean and durable, holding up well during extended treks through puddles, mud, and various terrains. However, they fall short in terms of comfort for prolonged distances or daily wear.
  • Stable and supportive, we like Sorel’s Brex Chelsea Boots for their unique, fashion-forward style. But the thick rubber material lacks breathability, and the narrow shaft makes them challenging to put on. This, in turn, caused rubbing and bunching of our leggings, compromising the overall comfort of the boots.

Where We Stand

After testing more than 55 pairs of rain boots, Bogs’ Sweetpea Tall Rain Boots were the clear winner for their sleek look, grippy traction, and comfortable fit. As we continue to test each pair of rain boots at home, including some new releases, we will update our list of recommendations if we notice anything substantial that we haven't already documented.

What to Look for When Shopping for Rain Boots

  • Height: When the wrong boot height meets high waters, it can mean the perfect storm for cold, drenched limbs and feet. Always consider the conditions in which you’ll be wearing your boots when shopping. If you plan on off-roading in areas of high grass or crossing streams, choose a taller boot. Shorter boots may suffice for a rainy urban commute. However, in heavy rain or if you anticipate encountering deep waters, always opt for tall boots to protect against splashes, muck, and even wind gusts.
  • Weight: It can be an exhausting leg workout to lug along in heavy clompers. Bulky boots can be also hazardous in some scenarios but can provide some stability in others. Take note of the weight of your boots and ensure the materials resist and shed moisture to maintain all-day comfort.
  • Comfort and Support: When selecting rain boots, prioritize a supportive midsole and plush cushioning, tailored to the activity at hand. If you will be spending many hours walking in the boots, ensure they have a good heel-to-toe roll. For prolonged activity in wet conditions, opt for a breathable boot that effectively locks out moisture. While you probably don't want to wear rain boots on a rowing machine, you'll definitely want to throw them on when you're on the way to the gym.
  • Insulation: When facing heavy rain, it’s important to keep your feet warm and dry. Many rain boots are unlined, delivering a roomy fit that can slip on and off easily and accommodate pant layers or thick socks. On colder days with unlined boots, you may have to double down with warm, breathable socks. Alternatively, you may choose a rain boot with built-in insulation made from fleece, wool, neoprene, or Thinsulate. Insulation is measured by the lining’s GSM (grams per square meter) and/or temperature rating. The higher the GSM weight, the heavier (and warmer) the insulation.
  • Waterproofing: It goes without saying that when it’s raining (or it’s pouring), it is essential to select a pair of rain boots with sealed seams and waterproof technology. You can also opt for boots with water-resistant outer materials (like rubber or treated leather) at a height that will prevent water entry. After all, dry feet are warm feet.
  • Traction: To stay afoot as surfaces get slippery, you’ll need good traction. Rain boots with deep, cleat-like lugs are great for snow and mud while shallower treads with softer rubber are best for sticking to paved and slick stone surfaces. For a versatile pair that can tackle diverse terrains, consider boots with medium-sticky rubber outsoles, like Vibram soles.

How We Tested the Rain Boots for Walking

To find the best rain boots for walking, we spent more than two weeks testing over 55 pairs of rain boots from top, trusted footwear brands. When we evaluate rain boots—through at least two outings of varied distances, difficulty, and weather conditions—we evaluate each one based on the following key criteria:

  • Fit: After unboxing each pair of rain boots, we try them on to see how they fit. We evaluate if they feel true to size, narrow, or wide, and if we would recommend sizing up or down. During test walks, we gauge comfort level: Are the boots immediately comfortable? Is there adequate arch and ankle support? Does the material feel sturdy or flimsy? Is there sufficient breathability to prevent overheating and sweating? Rain boots earn high scores when they fit properly, providing comfort and support without causing discomfort, pain, hot spots, or excessive sweating.
  • Durability: As we continue to wear the rain boots, we assess the feel of their constrictions and materials, distinguishing between low and high quality. We carefully consider the weight of the boots: Do they feel too light, heavy, or just right? Is the weight due to their length, sole thickness, or another notable feature? We also observe if the rain boots show unusual or excessive signs of wear and tear by the end of the testing period. We prioritize well-made boots that hold up over time.
  • Performance: Rain boots for walking should be completely waterproof and have a non-slip outsole to deliver traction on diverse terrain. We carefully evaluate whether each rain boot meets that criteria by testing them in wet conditions (rain, snow, and more). Rain boots that keep us dry, warm, and safely sure-footed earn high scores in this category.
  • Waterproofing: When shopping for rain boots, the most important consideration is (undoubtedly) waterproofing. To thoroughly assess this key category, we perform a wet test by stuffing paper towels into the boot and running the entire exterior under a steady stream of water. After letting it sit for five minutes, we examine whether the paper towel is wet or not. Rain boots earn a perfect score if they prove to be watertight, yet breathable, keeping feet comfortable and dry.
  • Value: To give each rain boot a value score, we don’t look at its price until testing is complete. Rain boots receive a high score if the price aligns with their value and features, and if we would be willing to pay the full price for the product, or potentially even more.

Frequently Asked Questions

When and why should you wear rain boots?

You should wear rain boots when—you guessed it—it’s wet outside. This will ensure a more comfortable and safer experience by preventing the accumulation of moisture that can cause a damp environment for blisters, fungus, infection, and odor-causing bacteria to thrive, says Jacqueline Prevete, a podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon.

Do you wear socks with rain boots?

Yes. You should wear moisture-wicking, breathable socks (made with a wool or synthetic blend) with your rain boots to keep your footwear fresh and (most importantly) prevent your feet from getting cold or developing uncomfortable blisters, funguses, or infections.

Can you wear rain boots in the snow?

Yes, some rain boots can be worn in the snow, provided they have adequate insulation to keep your feet warm. They should also have traction with deep lugs to provide stability on slush and ice, preventing slips and falls.
